When getting a new cat or kitten, it is very important to get her feel good in the new home and family you are bringing her in. Planning and patience are the two main elements of successfully adopting a cat and making the adjustment period be as rapid and stress-free as can be.
Cats are generally very territorial and it is a very important thing to their emotional wellness to have a place to call home. After the stress from having been in a shelter or being given up for adoption, being brought to a strange new home increases that stress. So imagine the state of that poor cat! Your task is to make feel comfortable as quickly as possible in the new home you are providing her.
The best strategy is to keep her in a single room for several days and give her everything she may need in there. The idea of this is to allow the cat to be the owner of small new territory at its own pace and without competition. Different cats act differently when put in such a situation. Some cats may hide under the bed and go out to explore the new house at once, others may stay hidden for as long as a week. But whenever they are ready, they will surely come out!
Meeting the new family is very important too, as everyone will be very anxious to meet the new pet. But you should not frighten the cat with all this excitement! Should the cat approach you, offer her an outstretched hand to sniff. If she accepts it, you can then freely pet her. But never allow them to pounce on your fingers, because as pleasant as it may feel while the cat is still a kitten, once they grow, cats can hurt either you or the kids.
Like humans, cats can get real jealous, so in case you already own a cat, make sure that the older cat does not get jealous of the new kitten in the house and accept her around. Love and attention must equally be given for each and everyone of the pets in a house. One must reassure your pet that it is still the center of your universe!
Making two cats get along can be very tricky, but provided that you allow them to slowly get to know one another, they will soon enjoy playing together. Just keep your older cat's routine intact and don't allow the new one to sleep in any of her favorite places and they will surely become friends. |
