Poor eating habits and lack of physical activity is the main reason why so many people in the world are out of shape. Another reason is that people just do not know how to monitor their body fat properly which leads to increases in fat they are unaware of. A person that experiments with a high calorie diet in order to get stronger may only pay attention to how much weight he can lift and how much weight he gains neglecting to monitor his body fat. Just because is weigh is increasing does not mean it is muscle it could be fat. The same situation could go for someone looking to lose weight. They could lose 5 pounds in a month but without monitoring their body fat they will not know whether or not they lost fat or muscle. If they lose muscle their body fat will automatically go up.
If you really want to get in better shape the first step should be to buy a scale that allows you to mentor your body fat. Doing so will let you determine if you gaining muscle or losing muscle or gaining fat or losing fat. Know that information can allow you to adjust your diet and workout accordingly.
